They were in a small Wyoming town to help build a church, and they were on their way home to Idaho in a small, single-engine airplane. Emergency responders found all three dead in the small plane after it crashed near the Grace, Idaho airport last Monday.
The airplane crash claimed the lives of two adults and a 16-year-old boy. The boy’s father was piloting the private aircraft when it circled the airport and crashed into a field near a private landing strip around 5:45 p.m., according to kpvi.com. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is still investigating the fatal crash.
If it seems that commercial airplane disasters are the only plane crashes that make headlines, it is because they are rare. They happen only a few times a year and carry hundreds of passengers. However, crashes involving single-engine planes, cargo planes and propeller planes happen nearly every day in the United States.
There are a number of possible causes that contribute to airplane crashes, including, pilot error, air traffic control error, faulty equipment, lack of proper maintenance and natural causes (bird strikes). What most of these causes have in common is that they involve human error.
While the NTSB continues its investigation of the above crash, the hard reality is that most airplane crashes are avoidable.
