What We Know About Infant Sleeper Devices
On October 31, 2019, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning that cautioned people from using any infant inclined sleep products. They have been linked to at least 73 infant deaths in the US. This warning comes days after the CSPC commissioners voted to prohibit the sale of any infant sleeper than has an incline of greater than 10 degrees.
A letter by Consumer Reports CEO Marta Tellado to all infant sleeper manufacturers recommends that they recall any infant inclined sleepers on the market.
A New Inclined Sleeper Study Uncovered Serious Problems
After discovering dozens of infant sleeper deaths, many of them associated with the recalled Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper, the CSPC commissioned an independent study of infant sleepers. The study’s findings were shocking. It said, in part, that “none of the inclined sleep products that were tested and evaluated as part of this study are safe for infant sleep.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has repeatedly stated that no infant inclined sleeper is safe. They recommend that infants “sleep on their backs, alone, unrestrained, on a firm, flat surface, free of padding, bumpers, and other soft bedding.”
The study of infant inclined sleepers was led by Erin Mannen, Ph.D., a biomechanics researcher and assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
