Whether a client is injured on a construction site or is suffering financially from a breached real estate development contract, we have the skills to litigate construction cases.
In the construction industry, employer negligence can result in some of the most dangerous hazards. In Florida, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the construction industry had the highest number of work-related fatalities between 2007 and 2011 compared to other industries. One of the most serious fatal construction accidents our firm has handled involved the collapse of a five-story parking garage. It left the families of several workers with questions of why this accident occurred and whether it was preventable.
Our law firm is working closely with several of the surviving family members of the four workers killed by the Miami-Dade Community College parking garage collapse. The collapse occurred on October 10, 2012. This construction project, was valued at $22.5 million. It included five floors of solid concrete that would have potentially housed 1,500 vehicles as well as classrooms and office space for the college campus.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has concluded an investigation into the Miami garage collapse. It found violations of at least five of the contracting companies working on the parking garage project. These are then responsible for the events that led to the construction accident. The report noted that these serious oversights, as well as a failure to create a workplace for employees free from recognized hazards, were all contributing factors that led to the deaths and injuries of many workers. The amount OSHA fined the companies, including MEP Structural Engineering and Inspections, Inc. as well as general contractor Ajax Building Corporation, Inc., totals roughly $38,000.
The law firm of Colson Hicks Eidson believes that construction workers have the right to a safe work environment. Please contact a construction attorney from our law firm if your family was affected by the Miami-Dade Florida garage collapse. Our lawsuit claims that gross negligence as well as blatant disregard for the lives and safety of their hard-working employees led to these injuries.
We hope that, as a result of this legal action, other contracting companies will place a higher value on creating a workplace free of preventable defective construction accidents.
