Florida is a popular destination for many people and their families. The state offers a variety of activities for vacation goers, which is increasing including helicopter rides and tours. These rides can vary in price, and just like most things, the price equals the quality. Cheaper rides may not have the right certifications and safety protocols.
Typically, helicopter fatalities and crashes occur because of faulty mechanical errors or flying in unsuitable conditions. If you or a loved one have been involved in a helicopter accident, is it important that you know your rights? The Miami personal injury attorneys at Colson Hicks Eidson will hold all responsible parties liable and fight to get you the compensation you deserve.
Liable Parties In A Helicopter Accident
Due to the complexity of helicopters and their flight procedures, many parties work together to ensure a safe flight. There are many other individuals and entities who inspect, maintain, build, and service helicopters and because of this, they can all be held responsible when an accident occurs.
There are many instances when an accident is caused by pilot negligence, and therefore the pilot will be the only party liable for the accident. However, when the accident is caused by something outside of the realm of the pilot’s responsibilities, the chain of liability will start at the manufacturer.
When a company and manufacturer become part of the lawsuit, it can become costly, time-consuming, and involve a great deal of due diligence. Due to complications that can arise in such a claim, it is imperative to speak to an experienced attorney.
Helicopter Accident Statistics
According to reports done throughout the last 20 plus years, Florida has consistently remained in the top 5 (usually top 3) for the highest number of helicopter accidents. In recent statistics, Florida, Texas, and Louisiana together totaled over 20% of all accidents across the country.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has reported from recent data that helicopter accidents occur at a higher and more frequent rate than aircraft crashes. Helicopter accidents occur roughly 35% more often per hour than aircraft accidents.
Helicopter Accidents In Florida News
Recently, there was a helicopter accident that occurred from a crash near an airport in Florida. There were four fatalities in the crash. The helicopter involved in the crash was conducting a flight test for a “new bucket water release system” as a firefighting helicopter, according to a New York Times article.
The pictures from the incident showed black smoke coming from the crash site. A preliminary investigation into the incident uncovered that the reason for the crash was a mechanical failure. The final investigation found that a mechanical error led to the loss of control of the buck, which then caused the rotor section to fall off.
The NTSB has yet to release their full, final investigation findings and there is not a lawsuit on record against any party involved.
