Ford has announced a recall for 1.38 million Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZs with a terrifying defect. According to Ford, the bolts that hold the steering wheel and steering wheel column together can loosen over time. This may cause the steering wheels in these vehicles to loosen or detach.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the agency responsible for regulating automobile safety, has received horrifying complaints from consumers who own these vehicles. A driver from Harriman, Tennessee said they veered off the interstate after the steering wheel loosened. Another driver from Illinois said the steering wheel turned 360 degrees without warning while the vehicle was being driven at 55 miles per hour. One driver had the steering wheel fall off in his or her lap while turning into a gas station.
The following vehicles are affected by this recall:
- 2014 through 2017 model-year Ford Fusions manufactured between August 6, 2013 and February 29, 2016 at Ford’s plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
- 2014 through 2018 model-year Ford Fusions and Lincoln MKZs manufactured between July 25, 2013 and March 5, 2018 at Ford’s plant in Hermosillo, Mexico.
The recall affects vehicles sold in the US and Canada. You could contact your nearest Ford or Lincoln dealership to see if your vehicle is affected by this recall. In addition to this recall, Hyundai recently recalled roughly 44,000 Santa Fe and Santa Fe sport SUVs with a similar defect.
