Cyclists aged 15-24 years old and 45 years old and older have the highest bike accident death rates, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
After a bicycle accident involving a garbage truck claimed the life of their 18-year-old son, two parents have filed a lawsuit, claiming the truck driver is to blame for their son’s death.
According to WTVJ-TV, the incident occurred last March around 6:35 a.m. at the intersection of Lyons Road and Coconut Creek Parkway, as the 18-year-old man was riding his bicycle to Broward College in Coconut Creek, Florida. Prior to being hit by the garbage truck’s lowered lift system, the young man was wearing light clothing and riding neon green bicycle, according to the family’s attorney.
The attorney alleges that had the truck driver had the truck’s “front loading arm in the proper position” he would have been able “to see him and to avoid him.”
