A Canadian man in Miami for the Ultra Music Festival was the victim of a serious hit and run accident Sunday morning. The man was struck from behind with enough force that the vehicle’s grill came off and remained in the roadway after the driver fled the scene.
The victim remains in critical condition with injuries that include a broken leg, broken shoulder, bruised lung and facial cuts. The hospital chose to place him in a medically-induced coma to reduce the harmful effects of any possible brain injuries from the accident.
Florida has seen a dramatic rise in the number of fatal hit-and-run crashes during the last two years. Hit-and-run accidents involving fatalities went up 23 percent from 2013 to 2014, and nearly half of 2014 deaths from hit-and-run accidents were pedestrians.
What Do I Do After a Hit and Run Accident?
A hit-and-run accident, or an accident where the driver at fault intentionally leaves the scene after causing injury and/or damage, is a serious crime that should be immediately reported to the police. It is important that the victim of a hit-and-run accident gather as much information as possible about the driver’s vehicle and other circumstances of the wreck.
The time, location and nature of the collision can all be crucial pieces of information as the police look for the unsafe driver that failed to stop. Taking pictures of the scene and your vehicle will help with remembering details and making insurance claims. The CRASH acronym can help you remember the steps in the event of an accident:
- CALL law enforcement.
- REMAIN calm.
- ATTAIN vehicle, witness and driver information.
- SKETCH the scene, showing vehicle crash locations.
- HELP the injured.
