In 2008, of the 25,351 passenger vehicle occupants who were fatally injured in traffic crashes, 3,914 were killed in head-on collisions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Head-on crashes often prove deadly, because many times, both vehicles involved in the wreck are speeding towards one another prior to colliding.
Recently, two south Florida men were killed in a head-on crash near Miami, according to WTVJ-TV. The wreck happened around 7 a.m. on 8th Street, just west of Krome Avenue.
In the moments leading up to the accident, a Ford Mustang and pickup truck were traveling in opposite directions on 8th Street. As the vehicles approached one another, the Mustang swerved into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the truck.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that both drivers were riding alone and that each was killed on impact. In addition, FHP mentioned that this accident was just the latest in a string of deadly wrecks to occur on Tamiami Trail.
