The nationally recognized product liability team at Colson Hicks Eidson has continually brought you information related to defective breast implants manufactured by Allergan. The BIOCELL textured breast implants manufactured by this company were recalled following recommendations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019. The recall came after significant evidence found that these implants lead to a higher risk of women contracting breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Now, three more deaths have been linked to cancer associated with these kinds of implants.
The Deaths Linked To Allergan Breast Implants Are Increasing
The FDA recalled BIOCELL textured breast implants manufactured by Allergan in 2019, and Allergan began a multi-channel campaign in an effort to contact patients who may not be aware of the recall. BIA-ALCL is considered an extra-nodal T-cell lymphoma, not breast cancer. Researchers and doctors have reported that this type of cancer often presents as a seroma eight to ten years after the initial placement of the implant. The FDA issued a recall only after they received reports of nearly 600 unique BIA-ALCL cases. At the time, that included 33 deaths.
Now, a Fortune report indicates that three more deaths have been linked to Allergan implants. All of these reports came within a six-month period starting just before the implants were recalled. This brings the total known fatalities caused by Allergan textured breast implants to 36 women.
Researchers indicate that the total death toll caused by BIA-ALCL could be higher than 36. The data released by the FDA is current only as of January 2020, and the FDA did not provide an explanation of why there is a lag in publishing data related to this issue. The FDA has been busy responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is likely this has hampered their ability to report other types of data.
In addition to the three new fatalities recognized by the FDA, the agency has also recorded 160 new cases of BIA-ALCL in the same six month period ending in January of this year.
