According to CNN, a United Airlines flight experienced severe turbulence while in midair, startling and shaking the 114 passengers and five crew members inside. United Airlines Flight 1676 was flying from Denver to Montana when the plane began shaking violently and convulsing just as it was about to land.
Three crew members and two passengers were taken to local hospitals for their injuries. One passenger hit her head on the ceiling so hard that she cracked the panel above her seat.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, turbulence can be unexpected and can happen even when the sky appears to be clear. Last month, another United Airlines plane returned to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey when the Beijing-bound aircraft hit severe turbulence, injuring five flight attendants.

Although the cases were initially filed in US federal court, they were arbitrated in Chile. The compensation levels in these cases were among some of the highest ever received for an aviation accident in South America.
