The parents of a doctor who died last year shortly after graduating from medical school have filed a lawsuit against Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township, Pennsylvania, where the woman received treatment days before her death.
The lawsuit states that the 26-year-old doctor had an “easily diagnosable, treatable and entirely correctable” condition when she arrived at the hospital in May complaining of a headache that began 10 days prior. The doctors and other staff treating the 26 year old gave her pain medications and performed several tests when she checked into the hospital on May 26, but did not order a head imaging scan to check for a life-threatening condition, nor did they have her see a neurologist until more than 40 hours after she arrived at the hospital.
Due to the hospital’s negligence, the young woman suffered a “horrific and painful death” from massive cerebral hemorrhaging, a stroke and brain damage. On May 29, she was taken off life support.
According to the suit, this young doctor’s death was completely preventable and she could “be alive and well today, fulfilling her dream of becoming a pediatrician,” if it had not been for the hospital’s negligence.
