A trip spent at a hotel or resort should be an opportunity for you to relax. However, this experience may cause stress if you’re injured on a hotel’s or resort’s property.
Accidents at hotels and similar locations can occur for a variety of reasons, and they may take a number of forms. Common examples include (but are not necessarily limited to) the following:
- Slip and falls
- Exposure to hazardous materials
- Fires
- Electrocutions
- Consumption of spoiled or contaminated food
- Swimming pool accidents
- Criminal activity due to insufficient security
The owners and managers of a hotel have a responsibility to minimize the chances of guests being harmed in such accidents. Guests themselves can also take steps to improve their chances of staying safe. They include the following:
Paying attention
In the age of smartphones, many of us are used to walking around while looking down at the screen of a digital device instead of our surroundings. This can put someone at risk of being harmed in a slip and fall or similar accident.
Hazards which may cause slip and falls are often abundant at hotels and resorts. Everything from a recently mopped floor to a frayed carpet can potentially cause injury. To avoid being hurt because you didn’t notice a hazard, remain aware of your surroundings when walking around a hotel, and only look down at your phone when you can do so safely.
Moderating alcohol consumption
Again, your goal may be to have fun and let go of stress during a vacation at a resort or hotel. Some people achieve this goal by consuming alcohol.
This is acceptable in moderation. Just remember that the more you drink, the easier it is for you to stumble, make judgment errors, and otherwise put yourself in harm’s way. The fact that you may not be driving anywhere doesn’t mean you can consume as much alcohol as you wish without having to worry about being injured.
Locking your doors
Make sure your doors are fully locked in your hotel room. If you parked your car at the hotel or resort, keep it locked too.
Although hotels and resorts should have effective security measures in place, taking basic steps like keeping your doors locked will further minimize your chances of being harmed by a violent criminal. Naturally, locking your doors can also guard against theft.
Exploring the property
This tip is worth keeping in mind whenever you may be staying at a hotel of any size. However, it’s particularly valuable if you’re staying at a large resort.
On the first day of your trip, try to find time to explore the property thoroughly. If an emergency situation arises, being familiar with the ins and outs of the resort can help you more quickly find assistance. It can also allow you to avoid dangerous areas.
