According to News4Jax.com, at least six people were killed in two separate accidents on Interstate 95 in St. Johns and Flagler County. Officials are still assessing damage to the highway from the second, fiery crash involving 11 vehicles that burned for hours.
Troopers say a 38-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on I-95 and for some reason drifted across the highway. The car struck the median and became airborne, traveled over a guardrail and entered the southbound lanes of I-95.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that an adult and teenager in a pickup truck were killed in the first crash, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on May 31, south of Palm Coast Parkway in Flagler County.
Backed up traffic from that crash is believed to have contributed to the second accident about two hours later when a tractor-trailer apparently rear-ended a car, causing a chain-reaction crash and starting a fire that engulfed several vehicles. For reasons still under investigation, the big rig failed to stop in time to avoid rear-ending several vehicles.
Troopers say a truck driver, two other drivers and a one-year-old boy died in that crash.
