According to Fox News, a plane involved in a fatal airplane crash on January 5 had attempted to make an initial landing before crashing during its second attempt at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport. The co-pilot of the 1994 Canadair Challenger business jet with twin-engines made a radio transmission to air traffic control only minutes before the crash occurred, saying that he had missed the first landing approach because of high tail winds.
Witnesses of the accident reported smoke and flames as the plane went down. One witness, comedian Kevin Nealon, posted on his Twitter account: “Horrible plane crash here at Aspen airport. Exploded into flames as it was landing. I think it was a private jet.”
Another witness of the plane crash, country singer LeAnn Rimes, tweeted from the scene: “So sad! Horrible plane crash we just saw happen at the Aspen airport.”
Authorities stated that the co-pilot of the plane was killed in the fiery accident and that the two passengers aboard the plane were transported to Aspen Valley Hospital with serious injuries. A spokesperson from the hospital said one passenger seemed to be in stable condition, but the other was is in critical condition. Both have since been moved to another medical facility for treatment. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fatal plane accident.
