Residents near a small airport in Pembroke Pines, FL are increasingly concerned over the number of small airplane crashes every year at the airport. According to a report at sun-sentinel.com, there are up to a dozen airplane crashes every year at small, general aviation airports in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
One nearby resident says he frequently hears the airplane engines cutout in mid-flight. In September 2011, a small airplane crashed through a fence shortly after takeoff at the North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines. There are homes situated just a few hundred yards from the fence surrounding the airport.
A spokesperson for the Boca Raton Airport said there is little that can be done about making things 100 percent safe for residents of nearby airports. Despite rigorous pre-flight checks, there are approximately 1,800 small airplane crashes for every one commercial airplane crash, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
With the majority of crashes happening just after takeoff, nearby residents live in fear of a small plane crashing into their homes. One resident has seen three crashes in her lifetime. Another recalls an airplane crashing into her church.
Given the statistics, would you feel safe living near an airport?
