Considering that four years have passed since the Deepwater Horizon explosion allowed millions of gallons of oil to spill into the Gulf of Mexico, it would be understandable to assume that the bulk of it had been cleaned up by now. However, that is, unfortunately, not the case.
Recently, it was revealed that of the estimated five million barrels of BP oil spilled into the Gulf, around 80,000 to 620,000 barrels worth of oil is resting on the seafloor. According to salon.com, a study conducted by University of California-Santa Barbara geochemists determined that 4 to 31 percent of the oil from the spill is still resting across a 1,235 square miles of the bottom of the Gulf.
Following the revelation, BP has disputed the study’s findings, according to Vice News. However, the researchers countered BP’s claim, citing that the evidence, including the locations of the oil concentrations and significantly higher concentrations of oil in only the top layer of sediment, shows that the Deepwater Horizon spill was the source.
