According to CNN, a 79-year-old Florida woman ran over seven pedestrians on February 2 while backing out of a handicapped space in a church parking lot, killing three people.
The elderly woman was backing out of a parking space in East Bradenton, Florida when she lost control of her Chevrolet SUV, striking seven pedestrians and crashing over a curb before driving into a creek. According to witnesses, the 79-year-old thought she put her SUV in drive but instead shifted into reverse.
Police officials reported that three elderly Bradenton residents died in the collision. Four others sustained serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital. The 79-year-old’s husband was in the car with her, and neither sustained injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) told CNN that charges are pending as the investigation continues, and stated that the accident was not alcohol-related.
