A massive collision between an 18-wheeler and a vehicle last November in Jacksonville injured five people. According to a report at news4jax.com, a tire on the semi-truck blew, causing the driver to lose control and hit a guardrail. The semi then crashed into four other cars before overturning on the side of the overpass on State Road 9A.
Two more cars hit the semi and another vehicle crashed into the guardrail in an attempt to avoid the overturned semi. In all, five drivers suffered injuries in the multi-vehicle car crash. Rescue workers flew one 39-year-old victim to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with critical injuries. Emergency responders took the other victims to nearby hospitals
Blown tires on big rigs are common causes of highway accidents like this. Tires that are under-inflated can flex easily and blowout without warning. Checking tire pressure should be part of every commercial driver’s routine. The first thing a blowout does is cause the driver to lose control of the big rig. At other times, a blown tire causes the 18-wheeler to immediately flip on its side. When there is an out of control big rig on the highway, smaller vehicles have little time to react
