We have previously discussed several studies that have linked the prescription medication Elmiron to a degenerative eye disease called pigmentary maculopathy. The original study focused on six women with interstitial cystitis who went to the Emory Eye Center between May 2015 and October 2017. Maculopathy is a condition that affects the center of a person’s retina, an area associated with highly sensitive and accurate vision. Damage to this area can significantly affect a person’s vision. Patients seen at the Emory Eye Center experienced a range of symptoms, including:
- Dimming of their vision
- Difficulty with near vision
- Vision loss in part of their eye
- A distorted vision where straight lines become wavy
One of the most important things to point out from this original study is that all patients involved underwent “rigorous diagnostic imaging in DNA testing to determine if they had any genes associated with hereditary retinal loss.”
Researchers found that none of their patients in this study had a family history of retinal disease. None of the patients had any history of pathogenic processes concerning the retinal disease. The one thing that every patient had in common in this study was the use of Elmiron over long periods of time. The median time of Elmiron use for these patients was 186 months.
As if to underscore their insistence that the prescription medication Elmiron was the cause of the eye problems presented in their patients, researchers pointed out that the youngest patient in the study was just 37 years old. This patient began taking 400mgs of Elmiron at the age of 23 and began showing visual symptoms at the age of 30, only six years after she was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis.
