Problems with textured breast implants continue to rise
We have reported that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled textured breast implants manufactured by Allergan. This recall is due to the evidence that these implants lead to an increased risk of patients developing breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
We have reported that this type of cancer is rare, but new studies indicate that we may not be able to call it rare anymore. A new study first reported by a Canadian news agency states that Health Canada says that is has received 106 reported of BIA-ALCL. Out of those, 52 reports have come in since May 28, 2019. Two of the reports they received resulted in patient death.
One woman who was diagnosed with BIA-ALCL is concerned about this type of cancer being labeled as “rare.” She says that “We have women in Canada presenting symptoms to their physician, and the physician is telling them that they don’t have cancer and … that they should get on with their lives because of the word rare.”
McGregor was diagnosed with BIA-ALCL in 2015 and continues to undergo follow-up care.
Despite the increasing prevalence of these cases, health officials in the US and Canada have warned patients against removing textured implants unless they have tested positive for cancer. They say that removal surgeries are risky.
While we are glad that Allergan’s Biocell textured breast implants are no longer being used in this country, the team at Colson Hicks Eidson knows that women who are affected need help.
