Late on the night of April 29th, an 18-year-old girl left her job at Dairy Queen and got on I-595 to head home. Unfortunately, she never made it home that night as the reckless driving that has plagued commuters on this interstate has claimed another victim.
According to witnesses, two vehicles, a green Ford Mustang and an unidentified gray car were racing each other and swerving in and out of traffic. One of the drivers cut off the young fast food worker, who veered into a guard rail to avoid the other car. The 18-year-old’s car bounced off that rail, crossed westbound traffic, and crashed into the center barrier. At this point the girl was okay, and was helped from her car by a witness who stopped to help.
“When the witness went to call 911, the victim attempted to re-enter her vehicle through the driver’s door,” explains a Florida Highway Patrolman on scene. The driver’s side door was still in traffic and while looking for her cellphone, the girl was struck by another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle stopped but the girl did not survive the collision.
