Not long ago we brought you the story of a Coral Gables boy who was struck by a car while riding bicycles with his father. The boy’s leg was broken and the driver sped away, but thanks to vigilant neighbors this Coral Gables hit and run driver was caught.
How Did Neighbors Help Catch The Driver?
A description of the car involved in the hit and run was released, and people in the neighborhood responded. Police soon received reports of a white Honda Civic with the characteristic black hood in a South Miami neighborhood. The driver was a 19-year-old who claims that he was falling asleep at the wheel when the collision happened.
“He stated to me that he… didn’t want to lie,” a representative of the Coral Gables police told the court on Friday, September 11. “He knew he was involved in the crash. He saw the boy in the street, and he didn’t stop because he didn’t want to have a confrontation with the father.”
The 19-year-old is now in police custody and could be facing years in jail for leaving the scene of the crime thanks to concerned neighbors and the Coral Gables Police Department. The police in our community have been working extra hard to keep our bicyclists and pedestrians safe, they even caught another hit and run driver recently.
If you see a hit and run accident, write down license plate numbers, the make and model of the car or if you have a smartphone, take pictures or a video. Your contribution can help bring closure to hit and run cases, and victims can raise awareness by taking these drivers to court.
