According to KHON Local 2, three people were killed and three others injured after a Maui County chartered plane crashed and burst into flames on Lanai on February 26. The incident happened only one mile from the airport.
Maui County officials said the deceased included a Maui Air pilot and two Department of Planning employees. Three crash survivors were airlifted to the Queens Medical Center on Oahu after the crash with burn injuries.
Authorities say the group had been on Lanai earlier that evening and had chartered a return flight on Maui Air which left at 9:05 pm. Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from a passenger on the plane who said he had been in a crash at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Maui County fire and police officials responded to the crash, and when crews arrived at the scene, they had to put out a brushfire ignited by flames from the wreckage.
The wreckage of the Maui Air twin-engine Piper PA 31 plane was moved to a secure facility to be inspected for defects or any information that could lead to the cause of the plane crash. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating the accident.
