Saving the environment was the main reason that many people purchased a Volkswagen TDI diesel car, but now it has been revealed that the automaker lied to the EPA about the vehicle’s environmentally friendly performance. Now VW could soon feel the rage of environmentalists all over the world.
Volkswagen Sued For Defeat Devices
A Palm Beach native feels especially betrayed by VW’s deception. She has filed one of the first lawsuits against the automaker for using specialized software to trick EPA testing. The software, which has been deemed a “defeat device”, switches fuel settings when it detects an emissions test. This allowed many vehicles to pass EPA inspection even though the cars were releasing as much as 40 times the EPA’s maximum level of nitrogen oxides.
Now Volkswagen will have to face the wrath of this Palm Beach woman who normally wouldn’t make a fuss, but when it comes to the environment, she is passionate and ready to fight.
“It’s diabolical,” she tells a local news affiliate. “It’s an evil act. There’s no other way to describe this. What they did was intentional. It was deliberate. It was deceitful and they need to be held accountable for their misconduct.”
With 11 million vehicles affected worldwide—500,000 of which are here in the US—VW may soon have to face many more drivers who were affected by this lie.
