The popularity of bicycling in Florida is rising faster than most of our cities can keep pace with. With the explosion of new cyclists, city planners are scrambling to improve safety measures, which is important considering our state has one of the worst bicycling safety records. However, city officials are not the only people working on the problem as local nonprofit tries to make wearing bike safety gear the new trend all over the state.
The Bicycle Action Committee (BAC) has been selling biking apparel with city seals on them. The jerseys and shorts have seals from Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, Miami Beach, South Miami, Miami, Doral, Pinecrest, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, and our own Coral Gables. North Miami, Miami Lakes, and the Village of Palmetto Bay are expected to join the roster soon.
What Makes This Safety Gear Special?
The jerseys are sold by Mack Cycle & Fitness and have special safety markers that were designed to grab motorist attention. Sales of the gear are funding city bicycle safety and awareness programs. Funds have already helped build a new mountain bike trail in Virginia Keys and have helped Coral Gables install new bike racks. Private sponsors are also encouraged to add their logos to the jerseys, since they are expected to show up on cyclists riding outside of the state, it could prove an unexpected advertising booster.
