The victim’s family wanted to make it known that their son and his friends were not drinking when their son lost his life in a boating accident late last month. The fatal accident happened in Coral Springs while three teenage boys were boating in a canal, according to a report at wsvn.com.
The 17-year-old victim was in an inner tube behind the boat. The inner tube struck the canal’s bank and the impact killed the boy. Coral Springs Police arrived at the scene and found the teen dead. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is investigating the incident. So far, authorities have not charged the boat’s driver with anything.
The victim was supposed to start his senior year in high school the following day. While boating, tubing and other water activities can be fun, they are also responsible for thousands of injuries every year. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were over 4,700 boating accidents in 2009. Those accidents produced 3,358 deaths and 736 deaths. In addition, there are millions of dollars in property damages caused by accidents.
Responsible boating is a way to prevent tragedies like the one here. The U.S. Coast Guard recommends that all boaters take a safety instruction course in order to stay safe on the water.
