A truck-bicycle collision earlier this month on the Sanibel Causeway killed a 46-year-old woman, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). At approximately 11:00 a.m., the victim and her husband were riding their bikes on the causeway. A truck swerved and struck the woman, causing her to fall over the guardrail and into the water.
A nearby boater saw the victim in the water and attempted to revive her using CPR. The boater said the victim appeared to have suffered head trauma and a broken jaw. The victim died from her injuries. The victim’s husband did not suffer injuries in the accident. The fatal accident shut down the causeway for several hours while investigators examined the scene.
A FHP spokesperson said the truck driver might have been asleep at the wheel at the time of the accident. Authorities may charge the truck driver depending on the outcome of the investigation.
