Scrutiny surrounds a Florida flying school after two siblings died in a rented plane earlier this month owned by Merritt Island-based Space Coast Aviation. The company is under investigation in connection with another plane crash last August that injured one woman.
Earlier this month, a 21-year-old student pilot and her 24-year-old brother rented a Cessna 152 from Space Coast Aviation. The woman was training to become a professional pilot. The plane went down near Blue Cypress Lake, killing the siblings. A last minute signal from one of the victim’s cell phones helped authorities locate the wreckage. Rescue crews waded through alligator and snake infested waters to recover the bodies.
A helicopter was unable to lift the wreckage, so rescuers had to hand-carry the victims’ remains from the crash site. A deputy from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said the plane went down more than three-quarters of a mile away from the nearest road. Investigators still await the retrieval of the Cessna from the water. It will likely be months before they can determine a cause of the crash.
