Ford is one of 10 automakers involved in a regional recall concerning Takata Corp. airbags. The recall involves over 20 million vehicles worldwide, covering areas where the airbags could be rendered faulty due to extended exposure to high humidity, including:
- Florida
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Puerto Rico
- Louisiana
- American Samoa
- Saipan
- Mississippi
- Guam
- Hawaii
- Virgin Islands
The Takata airbags are being recalled because in humid areas, the driver-side airbags’ inflators can rupture and explode, spraying metal shards at the driver. So far, the airbags have been linked to five deaths.
Ford recently announced that it is expanding on its initial recall of vehicles containing Takata airbags, recalling an additional 447,310 to bring its total to 502,489. Ford’s recall includes 2005-08 Ford Mustangs built at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant and 2005-06 Ford GT’s built at its Wixom Assembly Plant.
