Things keep getting worse for Carnival Cruise Lines. Following the wreck of one of its ships earlier this year and allegations that the ship’s captain abandoned ship, a fire broke out in another ship in the Indian Ocean. The blaze leftover 1,000 passengers stranded on the ship without power, water, or hot meals.
Last week, the crippled Costa Allegra vessel finally reached shore at Seychelles’ main island of Mahe. During the ordeal, passengers had to sleep outdoors on the ship’s deck to escape the 100-plus degree temperatures inside the ship. Helicopters delivered food and emergency supplies. Passengers reported that the sewage system was poor and they were extremely grateful that the fire did not burn out of control.
One passenger said that there was a lot of chaos and confusion when the fire alarm sounded. Personnel began to lower the escape boats into the water and the staff seemed unprepared and unprofessional, commented some passengers.
In addition to the heat and unsanitary conditions, there were fears of pirates as the ship drifted aimlessly off the coast of Somalia. Luckily, the ship reached the shore before any pirate attacks occurred.
