CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2010) – Attorney Dean Colson, Partner at the Coral Gables-based Law Firm Colson Hicks Eidson, has been appointed by Florida Governor Charlie Crist to the Florida Board of Governors, a 17-member board responsible for the management of Florida’s State University System.
Colson, who also serves as a special advisor to the Governor on higher education, succeeds John Dasburg for a term ending January 6, 2017. Other recent appointees to the Board include Ava Parker, Richard A. Beard III, Patricia Frost, Morteza “Mori” Hosseini, and John Rood.
“Florida’s institutes of higher learning enrich our communities and our state,” Colson said. “I look forward to serving the residents of Florida and working alongside my fellow Board members to ensure that Florida’s public colleges and universities continue to serve a pivotal role in preparing our young people for the economy of tomorrow.”
Colson has more than 30 years of leadership experience serving in various civic and community roles. He served as Chair of Appointments for Governor Crist’s Transition Committee and was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to the Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission and Florida’s Commission on Ethics.
He was Chairman of the University of Miami’s Board of Trustees, Capital Campaign, Executive Committee, Academic Affairs Committee, and the law school’s Visiting Committee. He is a past president of the Orange Bowl Committee and was Chairman of the 1995 Super Bowl XXIX Host Committee in addition to serving on the board of directors for many charitable organizations in South Florida.
He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law, after earning a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University. He served as a law clerk for the Honorable Peter T. Fay, United States Court of Appeals and Fifth Circuit and for William H. Rehnquist, then Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
