Not long ago we brought you the story of two families that came to our state all the way from China seeking justice. Their children, both students at the University of Miami, had died in a pedestrian accident while returning to their apartments, and so their families came to America so they could pursue a civil lawsuit against the neglectful driver. Now the families of these fallen international students are finally getting compensation.
A South Florida jury has awarded almost $8.6 million to these families who have traveled such a long distance for justice. The jury declared that the driver of the Porsche that caused the accident was 95 percent to blame for what happened and should be held accountable for not paying attention while driving on the road.
The families still felt that the amount awarded was too small to compensate for their loss, especially since that total amount will have to cover lawyer’s fees and be divided between the families. Now they may have to wait even longer before the family can claim the $8.6 million, because the Porsche driver’s insurance only covered $500,000.
This case will take some time to fully resolve, but this verdict is a step in the right direction. No lawyer can guarantee a settlement or verdict in the same amount as what this family received, but contacting an experienced personal injury attorney is the first step to getting any restitution after suffering a loss. The lawyers at Colson Hicks Eidson have helped the victims of accidents get the compensation they deserve for many years, so don’t hesitate to call on us if you are ever in need of help after an accident.
