According to CNN, Graco is recalling 3.7 million child car seats over a buckling issue in one of the biggest product recalls ever.
On February 11, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Graco is recalling 11 of 18 model seats that the agency had asked it to recall. The 3.7 million seats make this recall the fourth biggest ever for car seats. The NHTSA wants Graco to recall 1.8 million more, which would make it the largest product recall in US history.
In a statement, Graco said the voluntary recall affects “harness buckles used on all toddler convertible car seats and harnessed booster seats manufactured from 2009 to July 2013.” The NHTSA stated that the red release button in the center of the harness can become difficult to unlatch or can become stuck, which could make it difficult or even impossible to remove a child from a car seat quickly in the event of an emergency.
The recalled models include the following toddler convertible car seats:
- The Cozy Cline
- Comfort Sport
- Classic Ride 50
- My Ride 65
- My Ride 65 with Safety Surround
- My Ride 70
- Size4Me 70
- My Size 70
- Head Wise 70
- Smart Seat
The harnessed booster seats that are part of the recall include:
- Nautilus 3-in-1
- Nautilus Elite
- Argos
The seven models that Graco is not recalling despite being asked to do so by the NHTSA are all infant seats, including:
- Snugride
- Snugride 30
- Snugride 32
- Infant Safe Seat-Step 1
- Snugride 35
- Teutonia
- Snugride Click Connect 40
Graco is offering a “replacement harness buckle to affected customers at no cost.” Consumers can obtain one by calling 800-345-4109 or by emailing consumerservices@gracobaby.com.
