On October 7, a woman was killed and a man hospitalized after the sport utility vehicle (SUV) they were in overturned in Delray Beach.
Officials said that for unknown reasons the driver lost control, struck a concrete wall, rolled over and slammed into a tree. Delray Beach Fire Rescue Captain Kevin Saxton said the man and woman were ejected after the SUV overturned multiple times.
A retired Delray Beach firefighter and off-duty Fort Lauderdale fire chief heard the crash, called 911 and started caring for the victims before rescuers arrived. The female passenger in the SUV died at the scene. The driver was taken to Delray Medical Center in critical condition.
The Dangerous and Fatal Consequences of SUV Rollovers
In just seconds, an SUV rollover accident can cause severe injuries that can change your life forever. SUV’s are taller, narrower and have a higher center of gravity than passenger vehicles. The body type of an SUV makes it more prone to rollover accidents than any other type of vehicle. With the lack of a roll bar and a weak roof, passengers and drivers of SUV’s are likely to suffer a brain injury, spinal cord injury, broken bones and even death.
